Synopsis
A bright 11-year-old girl from south Los Angeles, Akeelah excels in spelling and competes in contests against her mother's wishes. She receives tutoring from her principal, a strict coach, and supportive neighbors, leading to a chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
